Toys for the first year, without the overwhelm

The first year is three different kids wearing the same onesie. A two-month-old mostly watches and listens. A six-month-old grabs, gums and drops things off the high chair like a tiny physicist. A ten-month-old is busy pulling up on furniture and has opinions. One toy will not carry all three stages, and it does not have to.

Months 0 to 3: the audience phase

Newborns cannot do much with a toy, but they take everything in. High-contrast shapes, gentle music, a kick that makes something happen. This is the play gym era. Put the baby under it, and the gym does the entertaining while the baby files it all away. Months 4 to 8: everything goes in the mouth

Once grabbing starts, the job description of a toy changes: it must be holdable by clumsy hands, chewable, and interesting on the twentieth inspection. Months 9 to 12: the little engineer
