We shrunk two of our most familiar play designs into hand-held sensory toys for new babies. One rolls across the floor with rattling beads inside, while the other rocks on a curved base with rings that clack together. Both fit small fingers.

• Corn popper rattle. Bright beads bounce inside the clear dome when shaken. The textured handle gives baby a spot to chew, and the bottom wheels roll freely across a blanket or tabletop.
• Rock a stack clacker. Five rings slide and knock together along the post to make sound. The rounded base wobbles back and forth when batted with a hand.
• Take along clip. A link at the top of the ring stacker hooks directly to a stroller canopy, gym arch, or travel bag. It stays put on the go.
• Grasping and motor play. Shaking, rolling, and clutching these two pieces lets babies practice hand grip and explore sound through cause and effect.
